XAVIER marks the spot

Construction of Catholic Education SA’s newest school at Two Wells will start this month, when a long-held dream for the local community finally becomes a reality.

Not even COVID-19 restrictions dampened enthusiasm for last week’s “turning the sod” ceremony at the site, where stakeholders, current Xavier College staff and students, as well as future students, gathered to mark the occasion.

Stage one of the multi-million project includes a $9.875M building development, something project leaders say will bring a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Catholic Education SA announced Mossop Constructions as the builder for the new school that will open in 2021. The school will be a campus of Xavier College and will be built in Two Wells’ Liberty Estate.

It will initially cater for students from Reception to Year 6 and grow to become an R – 12 College catering for upwards of 1000 students.

Adelaide Plains Council Mayor Mark Wasley said the council was pleased to give local residents more choice in the education arena.

“The Xavier College campus within the Liberty development at Two Wells is fantastic for our region and is being eagerly anticipated by residents with school age children,” Mayor Wasley said.

One such family is the Barber family of Two Wells, where mum-of-four, Cindy Barber, is looking forward to the new school taking shape.

“I’m very excited to watch the build begin, all the while knowing my child’s first years of future learning are going to be at Xavier in Two Wells,” Cindy said.

“It’s such a great opportunity to now have choice of schooling for our children in this township.”

South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools chairperson, Professor Denis Ralph, attended the ceremony on May 14, and is excited about the project and what it means for the region.

“We are pleased to be working in partnership with Land Australia, Mossop Constructions and Edge Architects on this exciting development that will meet the needs of the growing population in Two Wells and the surrounding area,” Professor Ralph said.

Catholic Education South Australia director, Neil McGoran said the school will be the 111th Catholic school campus in the state.

“This new school is part of our commitment to expanding Catholic education pathways for children and young people,” Mr McGoran said.

“Xavier College has a very strong reputation in the local community and this new school will enable us to work in partnership with families from Two Wells and the surrounding areas to provide their children with an excellent Catholic education.”

The excitement was shared by Xavier College acting principal, Mark Flaherty.

“Xavier College is very excited to be expanding its offering of authentic, affordable Catholic education in the area and looks forward to meeting our new families as we grow within our new local community,” he said.

Land Australia’s managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, said it was fantastic the school was starting construction.

“The new campus will further underpin a growing and successful Two Wells community and the new Eden and Liberty residential developments while providing high calibre education for newly arriving families and wider region,” he said.

An artist’s impression and site plan of the new school will hopefully be released in coming weeks.
