Junior winter tennis challenge

By Marie Tapscott

The Friday Night Junior Tennis competition started on May 22 and is using the new FAST4 format introduced by Tennis Australia to give people a quicker and more exciting way to play tennis.

Lets are played, there are no advantage scores when deuce is reached, and if the set reaches three games all, a tiebreaker game is played then the first player to five points wins.

This year, five Two Wells junior players have joined in the competition and are having a ball!

Chelsea Foubister, Caitlin Stewart, Jack Tapscott, Jake Foubister and Airlie Tapscott have found it to be a great way to get warm on a chilly night and are enjoying new friendships with other juniors, lots of laughs and some great tennis in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

The juniors have been randomly grouped into teams of two across two divisions and each team is named after a prominent tennis player.

Each week teams play one match of doubles and then each player plays a singles match.

The competition is centred on fun and enjoyment of tennis and includes a pizza night, a sausage sizzle and a Wimbledon themed night to coincide with the start of Wimbledon. For this the junior players will dress in their best outfits to represent Wimbledon.

There has also been a round robin singles tournament and the juniors get to test their serve speed with a speed camera.

All matches are played at Essex Park, Victoria Terrace, Gawler starting at 7pm and will run for about 13 rounds until August 28, breaking for the school holidays.

There will be awards for winners in each division as well as leadership and development awards to focus on long term enjoyment of tennis.
